Ernst and Young Assessment Centre Tests Guidance To Pass In First Attempt

Ernst and Young Assessment Centre: Pass at Your First Attempt

Well done on getting through the first round interview! Only 10% of applicants make it this far, so you’re already doing exceptionally well! Now it’s time to take it to the next level.

An Overview:

Stage seven of the Ernst and Young job application procedure is the assessment centre. Here, you will be undertaking written and group or role-play exercises and will be required to retake some aptitude tests from earlier. The specific aptitude tests you will be retaking depend mainly on the service line you have applied to, although all of you should expect to retake the numerical reasoning test.

Ernst and Young Assessment Centre Preparation:

Once you’ve picked a convenient date from the options available, you will usually have a week or two to prepare. As we all know, job tests can be daunting and how can you be fully confident of putting in a perfect performance if you lack Big Four experience? Show us your passion and hard-working attitude and we will give you the support you require to land your dream job.

Ernst and Young Assessment Centre Competency Criteria:

Ernst and Young have designed the assessment centre stage to assess you against their strengths criteria. These criteria are unique amongst Big Four companies, as the others use a ‘key competencies’ system instead. The test will be time-limited, so you must be able to withstand pressure. Our training will ensure that you are fully confident and prepared for any eventuality. Imagine the embarrassment and panic caused by ‘freezing up’ at the Ernst and Young assessment centre exercises and you’ll realise just how important this is.

Ernst and Young only provide a very vague description of their strengths system on their website, with no details on the initial and follow-up questions you can expect to face. However, you can draw on the experience of our experts, who have previously worked for Big Four firms, to give you a major advantage in this area.

Ernst and Young Assessment Centre Details:

The relevant software has been developed for the company by Saville Consulting, a renowned global occupational psychology consultancy that publishes various psychometric tests for Ernst and Young worldwide. You will undertake the written report exercise and, depending on your chosen business route, either the group or individual role play exercise too. All assessment centre exercises are detailed below.

1: EY Written Communication Exercise

You will be given an information pack to analyse and base two concise reports on through use of a computer, inside 40 minutes. The first report, written for a fictional Ernst and Young client, is to judge your analytical, business judgement and report writing skills. The second report, written for an Ernst and Young manager, is to get an impression of your work ethic and character. Tasks are set up to reflect genuine Ernst and Young work environments. Your responses during this process will affect later test stages.

2: EY Group Exercise

This exercise will be conducted in groups, mainly for the purpose of assessing your teamwork and coordination skills although other competency areas will be taken into account too. Depending on the service line you have applied to, the key topic will either be provided beforehand or on the day. You will all receive a standard ‘information pack’ to build up your knowledge on a particular topic, which you are expected to discuss with the team. You will be given 15 minutes in which to look through the information pack and will then get another 30 minutes to discuss it with the group. You are expected to confidently communicate your opinions with other participants and aim to reach a final conclusion.

3: Lunch With Colleagues

You will meet Ernst and Young trainees and seniors at lunch where you will discuss your questions and career aspirations and learn about their views on working for Ernst and Young. Be forewarned that this is not just a casual chat, it is in fact a 40-minute informal assessment during which you will be judged on your ethics and manners.

4: EY Role Play Case Study Exercise

In this exercise, you will be given a ‘reporting pack’ to analyse and error-check within 20 minutes. Following this, your notes and observations will be discussed over the phone with the member of staff who prepared the reporting pack. You will then discuss both your analysis and staff telephone conversation with an Ernst and Young manager, who will challenge and cross-question you further.

The short period of time afforded to you by Ernst and Young to view informational material during the assessment centre process is not enough in which to prepare. Therefore, you need the relevant information and guidance well in advance. Do not think that you can successfully guess your way through the assessment centre tests, as you will be sorely mistaken.

Ernst and Young Assessment Centre Results:

Your performance at the assessment centre will be kept on company record and used during Ernst and Young’s final considerations to decide whether or not you have landed the role. It is more than possible to successfully get through this stage by attaining a passing grade, but fail to secure employment when Ernst and Young take a look at your collective performances over the whole recruitment process.

Ernst and Young grade your ability on each stage between 1 point and 5. It is assumed by Ernst and Young that if an applicant can demonstrate ‘core capabilities’ (strengths) and attain the full 5 marks during the assessment centre process then they automatically become a perfect match for the firm.

This means you need to score the maximum 5 points on every single stage to set yourself apart from rival jobseekers and cannot afford to take a job test without having been properly prepared by Green Turn.
