Example 2:

Question: Describe a recent situation where you had to build a relationship with new colleague or customer?

 

Situation: I took part in the Engineering Education Scheme in which i achieved a Gold Award, which is the highest engineering award for students of my age.

 

Task: In a group of 4, we were given a real life problem by the National Grid which was to fine ways to increase the efficiency of a system of 6 turbines. To do this we created six model turbines and exposed them to wind source. We carried out various experiments on the system.

 

Action: We came across a very big technical problem which meant our results wouldn't be accurate. I was tasked with dealing with this problem. As we didn't have the expertise to deal with the task ourselves, I rung up a few engineers from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and asked for their opinions and advice. I found their details through LinkedIn. I used the internet as a resource. I tried to build an effective relationship firstly by clearly explaining our goals and highlighting that we had a common purpose in carrying out our research and that we were enthusiastic about it. I appreciated that they were busy people and did not bombard them with requests. I always responded promptly and maintained contract so they could aid us with the project.

 

Result: We were able to conduct fair and accurate experiments and i achieved a Gold award. I believe that highlighting that we had a common purpose/goal helped secure a relationship and i tried to maintain it with regular contact but not bombarding with requests.
