The KPMG in-tray exercise comes in two parts:

A. The ‘virtual office exercise’ uses a computer-based email simulation program like Microsoft Outlook. You will receive emails and voicemail messages to increase your understanding of various work-related situations. The primary questions relate to your enjoyment (or not!) of particular elements of the exercise and your opinions on your own performance. KPMG will also ask you to propose ways in which the procedure could be improved. This will take around 10 minutes on average and the time you spend will be monitored. Afterwards, the form will be held up against your actual performance marks awarded to assess your ‘self review and personal perception’ skills.

You are expected to write a succinct and well-structured report. KPMG provide you with an informational booklet approximately half an hour before the test, but this short period of time is nowhere near enough in which to prepare. You need the relevant information and guidance well in advance.

Your performance during the in-tray exercise will remain on record and is used in KPMG’s final deliberations to determine whether or not your application has been a success.
