Parents of Successful PWC Applicant 2024
Well done on passing the Job Simulation Assessment Tests! Approximately 90% of applicants won’t have made it this far, so you’re already doing performing well above average! Now it’s time to take it to the next level.
Stage ten of the Ernst and Young application process is the role-play exercise, which is part of the assessment centre process. At the assessment centre, you will be undertaking group exercises and written exercises too. You will also be re-taking the numerical reasoning test and one of the verbal or diagrammatic reasoning tests.
Once you’ve picked a convenient date from the options available, you will usually have a week to prepare. As we all know, job tests can be daunting and how can you be fully confident of putting in a perfect performance if you lack Big Four experience? Show us your passion and hard-working attitude and we will give you the support you require to land your dream job.
Ernst and Young have designed the role-play exercise to assess you against their strengths criteria. These criteria are unique amongst Big Four companies, as the others use a ‘key competencies’ system instead. The test will be time-limited, so you must be able to withstand pressure. Our training will ensure that you are fully confident and prepared for any eventuality. Imagine the embarrassment and panic caused by ‘freezing up’ during the Ernst and Young role-play exercise and you’ll realise just how important this is.
Ernst and Young only provide a very vague description of their strengths system on their website, with no details on the initial and follow-up questions you can expect to face. However, you can draw on the experience of our experts, who have previously worked for Big Four firms, to give you a major advantage in this area.
The first aim of the role-play exercise is for the applicant to showcase their professional capabilities and the second aim is for the company to understand more about the applicant’s work ethic and personality. EY tests candidates in two different forms of Role Play exercises:
1. EY Individual Exercise (to be taken by the candidate alone and not in the Group format)
2. EY Paired Discussion Exercise (to be taken by the candidate in form of a Small Group)
It all depends on the number of candidates who made it to the Assessment Centre (Recruitment Day / Experience Day). You will be given one or more of the above-mentioned Role Play exercises to sit during the AC.
As with all Ernst and Young assessment centre tests, the relevant software has been developed for the company by Saville Consulting and CAPP, a renowned global occupational psychology consultancy that publishes various psychometric tests for Ernst and Young worldwide.
For the Role Play exercise - You will be given a company/topic-related ‘reporting pack’, which you are expected to analyse and error-check within 20 minutes. You must make relevant notes and discuss these over the telephone with the staff member who prepared the reporting pack. Then, you will have a further discussion with an Ernst and Young manager, who will ask more probing questions to define and judge your observations.
Next, you will meet Ernst and Young trainees and seniors at lunch where you will discuss your questions and career aspirations and learn about their views on working for Ernst and Young. Be aware that this is not just a casual chat, it is in fact a 40-minute informal assessment during which you will be judged on your ethics and manners.

You are not given an opportunity to view informational or practice material before the role-play exercise. Thus, it is vital that you receive appropriate guidance at this stage because you do not want to be waiting for a meeting feeling nervous and unprepared. You need the relevant information and guidance well in advance to give yourself a realistic chance of success.
Your performance during the role-play exercise will be kept on a permanent record and used during Ernst and Young’s final deliberations to determine whether or not you have got the job. It’s more than possible to successfully get through this stage by attaining a passing grade, yet fail to secure employment when Ernst and Young recruiters take a look at your collective performances over the whole application process.
Ernst and Young grade your ability on each stage between 1 point and 5. It is assumed by Ernst and Young that if an applicant can demonstrate ‘core capabilities’ (strengths) and attain the full 5 marks during the assessment centre process then they automatically become a perfect match for the firm.
This means you need to score the maximum 5 points on every single stage to set yourself apart from rival jobseekers and cannot afford to take a job test without having been properly prepared by Green Turn.
Our research findings show that a massive 92% of applicants fail Ernst and Young’s role-play exercise, which in practice means that they have basically ruined their chances of ever securing a job with the firm.
